Beth C Bock

Dr. Beth C Bock is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at Warren Alpert Medical School and the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown School of Public Health, Brown University. She holds dual appointments and leads the Technology, Assessment and Data Analysis (TADA) core as a co-investigator on the STAR COBRE project. Her research focuses on technology-driven interventions for physical activity promotion, smoking cessation, and substance use reduction, leveraging yoga, mindfulness, and digital health tools like text messaging and smartphone apps.

Education: PhD in Psychology from Tufts University, postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Brown University, and internship at Harvard University’s Cambridge Hospital. She is also a Senior Research Scientist at The Miriam Hospital.

Research Interests: Dr. Bock’s work emphasizes the intersection of technology and health behavior change. Key areas include mHealth interventions for smoking cessation (e.g., TXT-2-Quit, Text My Quit), exercise videogames (Wii Heart Fitness), and yoga as a complementary therapy for diabetes and smoking cessation (HA1C study, BreathEasy trial). Her NIH-funded projects address disparities in health outcomes through culturally adapted interventions for Latinas (Seamos Saludables) and incarcerated populations.

Grants & Projects: Over 15 NIH grants, including R01 grants for exercise videogame efficacy (HL109116), ED-based smoking cessation systems (CA156699), yoga for smoking cessation (AT006948), and text message interventions for college students (AA021014). She has pioneered translational research in emergency department settings (STTEPS) and post-release smoking cessation (Sustaining Tobacco Abstinence Post-Release).

Labs/Teams: Co-leads the TADA core, part of the Brown University Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across public health, behavioral medicine, and technology development.
