Bertrand Neyhouse is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, leading the Neyhouse Research Group focused on advancing electrochemical engineering for sustainable manufacturing and energy storage. His work bridges fundamental chemical engineering principles with practical applications in electrochemical systems.
His educational background includes:
- B.Sc. from Ohio University
- Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- Postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan
Dr. Neyhouse's research centers on electrochemical engineering with emphasis on sustainable energy conversion and grid-scale energy storage. His group applies reactor engineering, mathematical modeling, and materials engineering to intensify electrochemical manufacturing processes, targeting redox flow batteries, electrocatalysis, and electrochemical plastic recycling to enable industrial electrification and reduce carbon emissions.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals dominant focus on redox flow battery technology (modeling, diagnostics, materials) and electrochemical recycling of plastics, with strong integration of fundamental electrochemistry and engineering design to solve scalability challenges in sustainable energy systems.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with:
- AIChE Transport and Energy Processes Graduate Student Award (2022)
- Martin Fellowship for Sustainability (2022)
- Distinguished Young Scholars Seminar (2022)
- National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (2018)
Dr. Neyhouse actively mentors graduate students (accepting MASc/PhD candidates) for projects in redox flow battery scale-up, reactor design for catalytic processes, redox-active polymers, and electrochemical plastic recycling, supported by fellowships including the Martin Fellowship and NSF GRFP.
The Neyhouse Research Group, based in Room WB224, comprises graduate researchers developing scalable electrochemical technologies through collaborations with industry and academic partners for sustainable manufacturing and energy storage applications.
