Bertrand Kibler

Bertrand Kibler is a CNRS Research Director and Head of the SAFIR team at the Laboratoire ICB (UMR6303) in Dijon, affiliated with University Bourgogne Franche-Comté. His research focuses on fundamental and applied optics within the Photonics department.

His educational background includes:

• Master's degree from the University of Franche-Comté (2003)
• PhD from the University of Franche-Comté (2007)
• Post-doctoral research at the University of Burgundy (2007-2009)
• Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from University Bourgogne Franche-Comté (2020)

Dr. Kibler's research spans ultrafast and coherent nonlinear optics in both conservative and dissipative systems. His work on solitons, breather waves, and nonlinear instabilities has established important connections between hydrodynamics and optics. In applied research, he focuses on fiber optics technologies, particularly Supercontinuum light sources and Mid-Infrared fiber optics for sensing applications.

His groundbreaking work includes the first observation of the Peregrine soliton (rogue breather), representing a significant contribution to nonlinear wave theory with applications across multiple scientific domains.

His notable scientific achievements include:

• CNRS Bronze medal (2012) for research in optics linked to hydrodynamics
• Fabry – de Gramont prize of the French Optical Society for contributions to breather wave studies

As Head of the SAFIR team, Dr. Kibler leads research in nonlinear waves and fiber optics from his laboratory in the Mirande Science Building (room D215). With over 150 peer-reviewed publications, his work continues to advance both theoretical understanding and practical applications in photonics.
