Bert W. O'Malley is a Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), overseeing its downtown and midtown campuses. Dr. O’Malley is an internationally renowned surgeon and innovator in skull base surgery, robotic surgery, and head and neck cancer research.
- Chief of Otolaryngology and Associate Director of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (1999-2003)
- Faculty physician and executive at the University of Pennsylvania Health System (2003–return to UMMC)
- Chairman and Professor at Penn Medicine
- Co-inventor of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and founder of the first human robotics head and neck surgery program
Dr. O’Malley pioneered molecular and gene therapies for head and neck cancer and investigated stem cell-biomatrix combinations for tissue reconstruction. He secured NIH grants, including co-principal investigator roles on clinical trials leading to FDA approval of TORS in 2009 and 2014.
His leadership extends to collaborations with Alison Brown (UMMC Midtown Campus President), Mohan Suntha (UMMS President and CEO), and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He is the son of Bert W. O’Malley, a professor and chancellor at Baylor College of Medicine.
