Bernhard Woytek is a Professor of Numismatics and Monetary History (focusing on Antiquity) at the University of Vienna and the head of the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History since September 2024. Previously, he served as head of the 'Documenta Antiqua' department at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) from 2013–2020 and deputy head of the Department of Ancient Studies at the Austrian Academy of Arts (ÖAI) from 2021–2024. He holds visiting professorships at Stanford University (USA) and Université d'Orléans (France), and has held fellowships at institutions including the British Museum and the American Numismatic Society.
Education and Academic Background: Studied ancient history, archaeology, and numismatics at the University of Vienna. Earned his doctorate in ancient history 'sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae' in 2002 and habilitation in numismatics and monetary history in 2009.
Research Interests: Focuses on Roman imperial coinage, ancient economic systems, and the history of classical studies in the Early Modern era. His work includes projects such as 'The Imperial Coinage of Emperor Nerva' and 'Fontes Inediti Numismaticae Antiquae (FINA)'. His studies also explore numismatic networks of scholars like Joseph Eckhel and their classification systems for ancient coins.
Professional Affiliations: Corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the German Archaeological Institute. Recipient of the Silver Token award from the French Numismatic Society (2021).
