Prof. Bernhard Hemmer is a professor of neurology and Director of the Department of Neurology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2007. He specializes in inflammatory and vascular diseases of the central nervous system, particularly multiple sclerosis. His research focuses on understanding disease mechanisms and developing new therapies.
Education: Medical degree from the University of Freiburg (1991), residency in neurology, and postdoctoral training at NIH (USA). Professional roles include membership in the Multiple Sclerosis Competence Network, European Congress for Treatment and Research in MS, and the Medical Informatics Initiative steering committee.
Research interests include MS pathogenesis, neuro-Lyme disease, neuro-HIV, and genetic disorders. His work has been recognized with awards like the Heisenberg Fellowship and Sobek Prize. He leads clinical trials for MS therapies and collaborates on international projects like MultipleMS and WISDOM.
Publications span over 500 articles, focusing on MS biomarkers, treatment efficacy, and neuroimmunology. He advises on drug development and chairs key neurology committees.
