Bernd Andeweg is a Lecturer in the Department of Geology and Geochemistry at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s Faculty of Science. His research focuses on structural geology, tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism, and sustainable subsurface use. He has organized fieldwork in Spain since 2000 and teaches courses such as 'Duurzaam gebruik van de Nederlandse ondergrond' (Sustainable Use of the Netherlands’ Subsurface) and 'Earth Science Research Methods'.
Education: PhD in Geology (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2002). His expertise includes plate tectonics, seismic risk analysis, and geological hazards. He advises bachelor/master projects in structural geology, energy transition, and artificial intelligence applications in seismology.
Research interests span Variscan Orogeny, fault zone dynamics, and the societal impacts of geological processes. He frequently engages with media for public outreach, explaining earthquakes, volcanic activity, and geohazards on platforms like TV, radio, and New Scientist.
Recent projects include the Urban Geology initiative (2025–2027) and collaborations on geothermal energy. His work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action (SDG 13) and responsible consumption (SDG 12).
