Bernard Schweizer serves as Professor of English within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, where he has held a tenured position since 2007 after joining the institution in 2002. Previously, he taught at the University of Zurich from 1996 to 2000 following his doctoral studies in the United States.
His academic credentials include:
- B.A. from the University of Minnesota (1992)
- Ph.D. from Duke University (1997)
Dr. Schweizer's research centers on 20th- and 21st-century British Literature with specialization in Modernism, the Female Epic, and Religious Subversion in Literature. He is a leading authority on Rebecca West and has extensively analyzed works by Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, George Orwell, Peter Shaffer, and Philip Pullman. His interdisciplinary approach examines intersections of ideology, religion, gender, and genre through the lens of Artists as Public Intellectuals and the Politics of Travel Writing.
His publication record reveals consistent scholarly engagement with British modernist literature, particularly through Rebecca West's works. Key themes across his books and edited volumes include religious doubt in "Hating God" (2010), political dimensions of 1930s travel writing, and feminist reinterpretations of the epic form. His editorial projects frequently recover marginalized texts and contextualize literary works within broader socio-political frameworks.
Award recognition includes:
- Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship (1999) for Rebecca West research
Dr. Schweizer founded the International Rebecca West Society in 2003 and organized its inaugural biennial conferences (2003, 2005, 2007) in New York. He currently serves as the society's president and maintains active membership in the Modern Language Association, Modernist Studies Association, The Space Between Society, and the International Society for Travel Writing. His research has been supported by competitive external funding including the Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship.
He leads the International Rebecca West Society as its president, fostering global scholarship through biennial conferences and collaborative publications that advance understanding of West's literary and intellectual legacy.
