Bernadette Sloyan

Dr. Bernadette Sloyan is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Environment and holds an Honorary Professor position at the University of Queensland's School of Environment. Her work focuses on ocean dynamics and its impacts on climate and marine ecosystems, with expertise in ocean circulation, mixing, and air-sea interactions across the Southern, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Research Interests: Dr. Sloyan's research centers on documenting and understanding ocean circulation variability through observational analysis and earth system modeling. She has pioneered studies on ocean mixing processes and air-sea interactions, with significant contributions to climate change adaptation frameworks and marine ecosystem management. Her work integrates physical oceanography with climate science to address Indo-Pacific climate dynamics and biogeochemical cycles.

Grants and Leadership: She leads an Australian Research Council Discovery Project (2021-present) on Indo-Pacific ocean mixing and has secured 14 competitive sea-time awards (2010-2022). Current leadership includes Co-Chief-Editor of EGU Ocean Science, Co-Chair of the GOOS Co-Design programme, and Chair of the IAPSO Ship-based CTD/O₂ Best Practice Study Group. She has served as National Representative for GO-SHIP and SCOR.

Teams and Collaborations: Dr. Sloyan directs the Centre for Southern Hemispheric Oceans Research (CSHOR) on Indo-Pacific interbasin exchange, contributes to Climate Science for Pacific Tuna Access, and leads IMOS Deep Water Mooring Arrays. She chairs international panels including OOPC and CLIVAR GSOP, and serves on the Australian Academy of Science's National Committee for Earth System Science.
