Bernadette J. Brooten is the Robert and Myra Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Professor of Christian Studies at Brandeis University, with additional professorships in Women's and Gender Studies, Classics, and Religious Studies. She directs the Feminist Sexual Ethics Project, focusing on transforming religious sexual ethics to combat legacies of slavery and gender inequality. Her affiliations include Brandeis University’s Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, as well as past roles at Harvard Divinity School, the University of Oslo, and others.
- Education: Ph.D. in Harvard University (1982), B.A. from University of Portland (1971), with studies at University of Tübingen and Hebrew University.
- Research Interests: Early Christian responses to female homoeroticism, slavery’s religious legacies, Jewish-Christian-Islamic sexual ethics, and gender in antiquity.
- Publications: Authored Love Between Women (1996) and edited Beyond Slavery (2010), with over 50 articles on ancient religious and social history.
Her work bridges historical analysis and contemporary ethics, emphasizing intersectionality and systemic critiques of slavery’s impact. Awards include the MacArthur Fellowship and NEH grants. She has advised numerous doctoral students and convened conferences on topics like sexual assault’s racial disparities and slavery’s cultural legacies.
