Berin Golonu is an Assistant Professor and Area Head for Art History in the Department of Art at the University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo). She holds a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, preceded by an MA from California College of the Arts and a BA from Vassar College. Her research focuses on Ottoman art, modern Turkish art, art and ecology, and photographic histories of the Middle East. She is completing a monograph exploring urban greenspace and cultural memory in late Ottoman Istanbul.

Her research examines intersections between art, ecology, and urban transformation. Recent work analyzes how Ottoman Istanbul’s public spaces reflected political and ecological ideologies. She has published in Journal of Visual Culture, Third Text, and art journals like Artforum and frieze.
Her grants include a UB Humanities Institute Fellowship (2023-24), a Getty/ACLS Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2022), and an NEH-supported ARIT Fellowship (2019). Previously, she curated over 30 exhibitions at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (2003-2008).
Lab/Team: Engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations on art, ecology, and urban studies through her research projects and monograph writing.
