Berge Solberg

Berge Solberg is a Professor of Medical Ethics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), affiliated with the Department of Community Medicine and Nursing within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He leads medical ethics education at NTNU’s medical school and teaches research ethics at the PhD level. He serves as Secretary of the Clinical Ethics Committee at St Olavs Hospital, sits on the Faculty Board at MH, and is a member of the NTNU Research Ethics Committee. Previously, he held roles as Deputy Chair of the National Research Ethics Committee for Medicine (2014–2022) and on the Biotechnology Council (2004–2013). Currently, he is a member of the government-appointed Abortion Committee drafting new abortion legislation. His work focuses on medical ethics, research ethics, and specific areas like prenatal diagnosis, abortion, genetics, organ donation, biobanks, and neonatal medicine. He emphasizes ethical challenges in autonomy, end-of-life care, consent, and coercion. His research has addressed topics like biobank consent models, genomic data management, and ethical frameworks for healthcare policies.

Prof. Solberg’s research spans over two decades, with publications in journals like the American Journal of Bioethics and Journal of Medical Ethics. He has contributed to policy reports on issues such as coronavirus vaccination prioritization, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), and organ donation protocols. His recent work includes analyses of ethical dilemmas in healthcare systems, consent comprehension in biobanks, and the cultural dimensions of prenatal and neonatal practices. He actively engages in public discourse through op-eds and media commentary on bioethical issues.

Prof. Solberg’s contributions extend beyond academia to healthcare governance, contributing to Norway’s ethical frameworks through committee roles and advisory positions. His work bridges theoretical ethics with practical healthcare challenges, emphasizing societal values and patient-centered approaches in medical decision-making.
