Benoît Schmutz is an associate professor in the Department of Economics at École Polytechnique and a member of the Centre for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST) and the Institute for Public Policy (IPP). He currently holds the Jean Marjoulet Professorial Chair and is responsible for the Chaire Développement Durable (DDX).
Dr. Schmutz specializes in urban economics and its intersections with public, political, labor, and environmental economics. His research focuses on how urban metropolises facilitate human interaction, with notable work analyzing the Yellow Vest movement to understand socioeconomic inequalities between territories. As part of his Jean Marjoulet Professorship, he investigates the role of cities in various matching processes between companies and workers, in the formation of couples, and in political mobilization. He is particularly examining job search behaviors in space and geographical barriers to employment following the rise of teleworking during the health crisis.

Dr. Schmutz began his academic career in the United States as a visiting researcher at Georgetown University and then as an assistant professor at Howard University. He joined École Polytechnique in 2017 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2020.
