Professor Benoît Ladoux serves as Principal Investigator leading the Tissue Mechanobiology Division at the Max Planck Center for Physics and Medicine, a joint research center of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. As a Humboldt Professor, he directs cutting-edge research at the physics-biology interface investigating how mechanical forces shape cellular and tissue behavior.
His research program focuses on mechanobiology, exploring how cells detect and respond to mechanical signals in physiological and pathological contexts. Key areas include collective cell migration, tissue homeostasis, cell extrusion mechanisms, cellular monolayers as active nematics, cell rheology, and mechanical aspects of cell competition. His work bridges physics and biology to understand fundamental processes in morphogenesis, wound healing, aging, and cancer metastasis.
Analysis of Professor Ladoux's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on the physical principles governing tissue organization and mechanical force transmission. His work consistently explores how mechanical constraints influence cellular behavior across multiple scales, from single molecules to entire tissues, with particular attention to epithelial systems and their collective properties.
- Humboldt Professor
Professor Ladoux leads an active research group investigating the physical basis of tissue organization and mechanical signaling. His laboratory develops innovative technologies to map and manipulate physical properties determining cell and tissue behavior, combining experimental approaches with theoretical modeling to explore chemical-physical signal interactions in living systems.
His research team operates within the Tissue Mechanobiology Division, utilizing advanced methodologies to study mechanical forces in biological systems, with particular focus on epithelial tissues and their dynamic behaviors.
