Dr. Benjamin Vien is a Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University. His work focuses on structural and human health monitoring, combining civil, healthcare, and defense applications. He holds a B.Eng (Mech) (First Hons.)/B.Sc (2013) and a PhD in Engineering (2017).
Dr. Vien leads ARC Linkage Projects involving UAV-based sensing and machine learning for digital twin applications with Melbourne Water Corporation and Jacobs Engineering. He co-developed patented medical devices for bone-implant osseointegration and fractured femur diagnosis in collaboration with The Alfred, the US Navy, and Monash Institute of Medical Engineering. His research also explores acoustic wave interrogation and single-crystal transducers for damage characterization, supported by the APMA Program under the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator.
Recent research output includes advancements in acoustic emission analysis, modal decomposition, deep learning for structural analysis, and piezoelectric material applications. Collaborations span institutions like RMIT, University of Sydney, and DMTC Limited under the Next Generation Technologies Fund.
His work aligns with UN SDGs addressing innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9) and industry, innovation & infrastructure (Goal 9).
