Benjamin Steinhurst is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at McDaniel College, where he has been since 2013. His academic journey includes positions at Williams College, the University of Bergen, University of Connecticut, and Cornell University. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Connecticut (2010 and 2007, respectively) and a B.A. in Mathematics from Williams College (2005).
His research focuses on fractal geometry and analysis, particularly exploring derivatives on fractals and their differences from traditional calculus on real numbers. Over 20 undergraduate students have collaborated with him on these projects. He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship.
Recent courses taught include MAT 3365: Fractal Geometry, MAT 1142: Hyperbolic Geometry Through Crochet, and MAT 1117: Calculus I. He is also the Faculty Advisor for Heroes Helping Hopkins, demonstrating his engagement with community service and student organizations.
