Benjamin Smallheer is an Associate Clinical Professor at Duke University School of Nursing since 2023, previously serving as Assistant Dean of the MSN program. He holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University (2011) and an MSN (2004) from the same institution. His expertise spans critical care nursing, nursing education innovation, and diversity/inclusion initiatives. He has led global teaching engagements in Nicaragua, Norway, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Taiwan.
Research focuses on advancing geriatric care, improving nursing pedagogy, and addressing gender disparities in nursing education. Notable grants include CVS Health scholarships (2024-2026) and leadership fellowships from Duke's Office for Faculty Advancement. Awards include the 2023 Excellence in Nursing Leadership and 2022 Equity Excellence Award.
