Benjamin Scharff is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Thomas B. Hagen Department of History at Mercyhurst University. His research focuses on colonial America, the early British Empire, and historic Native American communities. He is currently publishing his dissertation, “Busy Mischievous Fellows”: Imperial Agency in Pennsylvania During the Seven Years’ War, examining interactions between Pennsylvanians and British authorities in the mid-18th century.
Dr. Scharff actively engages in public history through collaborations with organizations like the Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society, the Seneca Nation of Indians, and the Flagship Niagara League. He leads experiential learning aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara and advises the Phi Alpha Theta honor society. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Flagship Niagara League and is President of the Pennsylvania Historical Association.
His teaching emphasizes colonial and imperial history, blending academic research with community-driven projects. Though no specific grants or awards are detailed, his professional affiliations highlight a commitment to both scholarly and public engagement.
