Associate Professor Benjamin Peter Turnbull is a cybersecurity expert at UNSW Canberra, where he serves as a leader, mentor, researcher, and education specialist. He has over two decades of experience teaching cybersecurity and has been instrumental in developing multiple cybersecurity programs at UNSW.
His research sits at the nexus of cyber security, simulation, and emerging technology. His primary research goal is to provide comprehensive simulation, exercises, and decision support platforms for emerging cyber systems. He works in the Digital Forensics, Cyber Security, Knowledge Representation, and Simulation and Scenario-based learning domains.
Professor Turnbull has secured over $3 Million AUD in research funding from sources including CSIRO, the Australian Defence Force, DST, the Cyber Cooperative Research Centre, and the US Naval Research Laboratory. His research interests include novel approaches to securing computers and networks, automated learning from large datasets, forensic analysis of non-traditional devices, and cyber situation awareness.
He has made significant contributions to cybersecurity education, co-creating and directing multiple programs including the Bachelor of Cyber Security (2025), UNSW Online Cyber Security Masters Program (2019-2023), Bachelor of Computing and Cyber Security, and Bachelor of IT/Cyber Honours Program.
Professor Turnbull has supervised 12 PhD students to completion and is currently supervising 6 more, along with 22 Honours student completions. His supervision focuses on cyber security, cyber-physical systems, influence analysis, and cyber intelligence.
