Benjamin Nathans is the Alan Charles Kors Endowed Term Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the Department of History, Jewish Studies Program, Russian and East European Studies Program, and Comparative Literature. He specializes in Imperial Russian/Soviet history, modern Jewish history, and the history of human rights. His work bridges academic rigor and public engagement, including contributions to the New York Review of Books and Times Literary Supplement.
Education: B.A. Yale University; M.A./Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley; non-degree studies at the University of Tübingen, Leningrad State University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and NYU Law School.
Research Interests: Nathans explores themes like Soviet dissident movements, Jewish-Russian historical intersections, and the evolution of legal and ethical frameworks under authoritarian regimes. His acclaimed books include Beyond the Pale (Koret Prize, Vucinich Prize) and To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause (Pulitzer Prize).
