Benjamin Morgan is a Professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Worcester College and the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. He holds additional roles as Fellow of Worcester College and Modern Languages Coordinator for the Oxford Comparative Criticism and Translation program. His research focuses on German intellectual history (medieval mysticism, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Frankfurt School), German film studies (Fritz Lang, Leni Riefenstahl), and comparative literature. Current projects include reinterpreting the Frankfurt School's interwar work to inform modern interdisciplinary scholarship.
Teaching emphasizes German language and literature, with specializations in intellectual history, film analysis, and intersections between cognitive sciences and phenomenology. He supervises graduate research on German cultural history from the late 19th century to the present, covering literature, philosophy, film, and cultural institutions.
Research interests span medieval mysticism, Nietzsche’s Prussian influences, Heidegger’s phenomenology, and the Frankfurt School’s legacy. Notable works include On Becoming God: Late Medieval Mysticism and the Modern Western Self (2013) and edited volumes on Walter Benjamin and situated cognition. Recent articles explore collective intentionality, Jungian psychology, and distributed cognition in cultural studies.
Publications span monographs, edited collections, and over 40 articles across journals like Interdisciplinary Literary Studies, Paragraph, and Poetics Today. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary interdisciplinary frameworks, addressing themes of identity, ethics, and cultural memory.
