Dr Benjamin Madden is a Scholarly Teaching Fellow in the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide, affiliated with the Department of English, Creative Writing, and Film. He holds a PhD from the University of York (UK) and has taught at institutions including Beijing Foreign Studies University. His research focuses on modernist literature, particularly T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, and intersections between literature and philosophy. He explores concepts like the 'ordinary' in modernism and its relation to normativity, publishing widely on these themes. Madden is eligible to supervise postgraduate research in modernist studies and related areas. His current book project examines seven facets of the modernist ordinary through critical theory frameworks.
Education: PhD in Literary Studies from the University of York; MA and BA from the University of Adelaide. Research interests include Australian literature, transnational modernism, and Australia-China cultural relations. Teaching spans British/American literature surveys, Asian Studies, and interdisciplinary humanities courses.
Publications highlight his engagement with Wallace Stevens, T.S. Eliot, and modernist aesthetics, with a focus on reinterpreting normative cultural shifts. His work bridges literary criticism and philosophical inquiry, addressing both historical and contemporary resonances of modernist thought.
