Benjamin Clayton, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a member of the Institute for Glial Sciences. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms regulating glial cell states in health and disease, particularly reactive astrocytes and their interactions with oligodendrocytes.
- Education: BS in Biology from University of Utah; PhD from University of Chicago under Dr. Brian Popko.
- Postdoctoral training: Case Western Reserve University with Dr. Paul Tesar.
Clayton's work develops cellular platforms for studying astrocyte-oligodendrocyte interactions, employing genetic/chemical screens to identify regulators of astrocyte reactivity. His research applies mouse models to validate therapeutic targets for neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's, with a focus on environmental chemical impacts and stress response pathways.
Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding astrocyte heterogeneity, environmental neurotoxins, and myelin repair strategies. His lab's methodologies include cortical spheroids, iPSC disease modeling, and high-throughput screening for modulators of glial function.
Scientific Award:
- Career Transition Award, National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Clayton collaborates with experts in stem cell research and neuroimmunology. His future work aims to translate glial biology insights into targeted therapeutics for neurodegenerative conditions.
