Dr. Benjamin Böcker serves as Director of the Chair of Energy Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Business and Economics. He has been with the university since 2012, progressing to leadership roles including Team Leader of Energy Systems and Innovations since 2018 and membership in the Chair Management at the House of Energy Markets and Finance.
His educational background includes a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Energy and Process Technology from Ruhr-Universität Bochum (2005-2010) and studies in Economics and Business Information Systems at FernUniversität in Hagen (2010-2013).
Dr. Böcker's research focuses on energy system flexibility valuation under uncertainty, analysis of renewable energy integration, and the role of storage technologies in future energy systems. His work employs stochastic optimization models to address challenges in energy markets and system planning. He has developed methodologies for adequacy assessment under uncertainty, considering spatially correlated uncertainties and flow-based market coupling.
His publication record shows consistent focus on energy storage valuation across various contexts, with increasing sophistication in modeling battery aging processes and multiple value streams. The research spans theoretical modeling in IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid to practical applications in European energy market contexts.
- Member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI)
Dr. Böcker has supervised multiple Master's and Bachelor's theses on energy system modeling topics including power plant availability modeling, stochastic security of supply analysis, and renewable energy integration in energy-intensive companies. His current research is supported by significant projects including OSMOSE (Optimal System-Mix of Flexibility Solutions for European Electricity), StoBeS (Stochastic methods for storage management), and VeSiMa (Security of supply and market development in Germany).
As Team Leader of Energy Systems and Innovations, he directs research activities and contributes to the academic mission of the Chair through teaching courses on Electricity, District Heating, Renewable Energy, and Energy Economics seminars using GAMS modeling.
