Benjamin Beranek is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Department of Finance, Economics, and Risk Management, Missouri State University, and an External Fellow at the Centre for Decision Research and Experimental Economics (CeDEx) at the University of Nottingham. His research focuses on experimental economics, particularly investigating social preferences, inequality aversion, and cross-cultural differences in cooperation and honesty. He employs innovative methodologies to address critiques of experimental economics' generalizability by engaging diverse subject pools beyond traditional Western university students.
Research Interests: Beranek explores topics such as conditional cooperation, social norms, and the impact of cultural diversity on economic behavior. His work emphasizes measuring interpersonal closeness and social distance, as well as the role of beliefs in voluntary cooperation. Key contributions include validating the Continuous IOS scale for measuring interpersonal closeness and analyzing behavioral mechanisms across societies.
Collaborations and Labs: His collaborations include projects with researchers like Geoffrey Castillo, Simon Gächter, and Till Olaf Weber. He has conducted lab-in-the-field experiments and utilized platforms like Amazon Mechanical Turk to enhance the diversity of subject pools.
