Benjamin Bates, Ph.D., is the Barbara Geralds Schoonover Professor of Health Communication at the Scripps College of Communication, Ohio University. His academic expertise spans Political Communication, Campaign Strategies, Election Messaging, and the Public Understanding of Science and Biotechnology. He has conducted extensive research in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on health interventions, public policy, and the intersection of communication with global health challenges. Dr. Bates has held leadership roles in the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), including chairing its Rhetoric and Health Communication Interest Groups. His accolades include the ECA Past Presidents’ Award and dual distinctions as an ECA Distinguished Research and Teaching Fellow.
Research Interests: Dr. Bates investigates how political rhetoric shapes public perception in debates and campaign ads, alongside exploring health communication strategies for complex topics like medical genetics and neglected tropical diseases. His work emphasizes participatory approaches in community development and culturally centered health education. Recent projects include studying vaccine hesitancy in Latin America and anti-violence public art in Ecuador.
