Dr. Benjamin Ashton is a Lecturer in Animal Behaviour at Flinders University's College of Science and Engineering. He holds an ARC DECRA Fellowship and focuses on cognitive ecology, animal behavior, and the impacts of anthropogenic change. His research explores how environmental factors influence cognition and how animals adapt to human-driven environmental changes.
He completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia (2017), followed by postdoctoral positions at Macquarie University and the University of Bristol. His work spans studies on birds and reptiles in Australia and South Africa, emphasizing cognitive performance, social dynamics, and climate adaptation.
Key research themes include: (1) causes/consequences of cognitive variation, and (2) cognition's role in anthropogenic stress responses. Recent work highlights how group size, temperature, and noise pollution affect cognitive abilities in wild populations.
Dr. Ashton's articles frequently address topics like cognitive evolution, thermal stress impacts, and behavioral adaptations. His work has been widely cited and featured in news outlets.
