Benedict McWhirter is a Professor in Counseling Psychology and Prevention Science within the University of Oregon's College of Education. His research focuses on adolescent risky behavior, resilience, sociopolitical development among Latino and low-income youth, and college student retention for diverse and first-generation populations, emphasizing connectedness to others, environments, and self as critical determinants of positive outcomes.
Education:
- PhD in Counseling Psychology, Arizona State University (1992)
- MC in Counseling, Arizona State University (1988)
- BA in Theology/Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame (1986)
- Immersion studies in Peru, Australia, and Turkey
McWhirter's scholarship centers on culturally responsive interventions for marginalized youth, investigating critical consciousness, connectedness theory, and sociopolitical development. His Fulbright Scholarship (2004) initiated fifteen years of collaboration with Chilean universities, yielding community-based programs addressing academic and social outcomes for Latino/a youth. Current work prioritizes immigrant student success through school- and community-level interventions.
Analysis of recent publications reveals consistent focus on measurement development (critical consciousness, future expectations) and intervention design for Latina/o populations. Key trends include cross-cultural validation of assessment tools, career development programs for immigrant students, and comparative studies of school connectedness across U.S. and Chilean contexts, demonstrating commitment to practical applications in educational equity.
