Dr. Ben Thompson is a Professor and Director of the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and CEO/Scientific Director of the Centre for Eye and Vision Research in Hong Kong. He holds adjunct roles at McGill University (Ophthalmology) and an honorary professorship at the University of Auckland (Optometry). His research focuses on human visual cortex plasticity, amblyopia treatment, and vision rehabilitation, with expertise in neuro-ophthalmology and optical technologies.
Education:
- BSc and PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Sussex, UK
- Postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA (Psychology) and McGill (Ophthalmology)
Research Interests: Vision rehabilitation, neural plasticity in visual disorders, ocular biology, and advanced optical technologies for vision assessment. His work bridges neuroscience and clinical optometry, emphasizing translational applications for conditions like glaucoma and amblyopia.
Teaching: Recently taught OPTOM 628 - Special Topics in Vision Science (2023) and OPTOM 682 - Visual Motor Neuroscience (2024).
Lab & Collaborations: Leads the Human Visual Neuroscience Laboratory and collaborates across institutions in Canada, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. Current projects include non-invasive brain stimulation for glaucoma rehabilitation and pediatric amblyopia treatment protocols.
Advising & Grants: Approved PhD supervisor with Sole-Supervisory Privilege Status (SSPS). Actively supervises graduate students and engages in clinical trial design for vision therapies.
