Ben Levitas is Reader in Theatre and Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London, specializing in modern Irish literature and theatre with a focus on W.B. Yeats. His interdisciplinary approach integrates theatre history with cultural and political narratives. Levitas holds an MA in Modern Literature from Queen Mary, University of London, and a DPhil from Oxford University. Previously teaching at Queen's University Belfast, he now convenes the London Irish Studies Seminar with Professor Roy Foster.
His research explores connections between Irish theatre, cultural nationalism, and modernity. Key interests include the avant-garde, theatrical modernism, and performativity theories. Current work examines theatrical innovation's relationship with national identity in 20th-century Ireland.
Levitas's publications demonstrate consistent engagement with Irish theatrical modernism and censorship history. His 2002 book The Theatre of Nation won the Michael J. Durkan Prize. Recent articles analyze performative transitions in contemporary Irish theatre and modernist legacies.
He collaborates internationally through the London Irish Studies Seminar and maintains research partnerships across European institutions. Levitas contributes to public discourse through conference presentations and edited collections on Irish cultural history.
