Ben L. Feringa is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Groningen since 1988 and a Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) Academy Professor since 2008. He holds the Jacobus H. van 't Hoff Distinguished Professor of Molecular Sciences chair and is a Hans Fischer Honorary Fellow at the Technical University of Munich. His research spans Organic Chemistry, Nanotechnology, and Materials Science, with a focus on molecular motors, self-assembly, and asymmetric catalysis.
His scientific achievements include the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for molecular machines, the Spinoza Award (2004), and the Körber European Science Award (2003). Recent research trends emphasize biohybrid systems, green chemistry in flow reactors, and biomedical applications of photoswitchable materials.
He has received grants such as the €26M NWO Gravity Program and an ERC Advanced Grant. His work is associated with institutions like the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, and Advanced Research Center - Chemical Building Blocks Consortium.
