Ben Dantzer is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan. His office is located in 4038 East Hall, and he actively teaches courses including Introduction to Evolution and Behavior (PSYCH 235) and Seminars in Biopsychology (PSYCH 730).
His research sits at the intersection of evolutionary ecology, animal behavior, and physiology, with primary focus on how developmental and early life experiences shape physiology, behavior, and life histories. Key research areas include:
- Evolution of behavioral and life history traits
- Physiological mediation and constraints on behavioral variation
- Field studies on red squirrels in Yukon, Canada and Kalahari meerkats in South Africa
- Mammalian models for understanding human social behavior evolution
Dantzer maintains an active research program through the Dantzer Lab, recently updating lab news in June 2025 after several years. His work demonstrates consistent trends in comparative studies of parental effects and stress physiology across mammalian species.
He is actively seeking undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers to join his lab, as noted in his current lab announcements including an NSF REU position offered in 2022.
Lab facilities are based at the Biological Sciences Building (1105 North University Ave, Ann Arbor), with field research operations in international locations.
