Ben Bolling is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of North Carolina. He holds a Ph.D. (2016) and M.A. (2010) in English from UNC, and a B.A. in English and Drama from the University of Virginia (2004). His research explores intersections of literature, popular culture, and identity through frameworks including queer theory, digital humanities, and cultural studies.
Research interests span:
- American literature and cultural history
- Comic studies and graphic narratives
- Digital media and multimodal composition
- Gender, sexuality, and queer theory
- Rhetoric and performance studies
Publications analyze cultural phenomena like Comic-Con and superhero narratives through sociological and literary lenses, examining how media shapes identity formation and cultural memory. His work shows consistent focus on marginalized perspectives in popular culture.
Awards recognize excellence in teaching literature and composition, including the Gaskin Composition Award (2016) and Tanner Undergraduate Teaching Award (2014).
