Bela Mulder holds joint appointments as Professor of Theoretical Biophysics at Utrecht University and heads the Theory of Biomolecular Matter group at AMOLF. He earned his PhD from Utrecht University in 1986, focusing on statistical physics of fluids, followed by research in disordered magnets at NCRPS Demokritos in Athens.
His research investigates the physics of biological organization, including cytoskeletal dynamics, chromosome topology, liquid crystal behavior in confined spaces, and collective phenomena in biomolecular systems. Current projects focus on understanding how physical principles govern cellular architecture and function.
Dr. Mulder develops computational models to study microtubule networks in plant cells, bacterial chromosome organization, and phase transitions in colloids, bridging theoretical physics with experimental biology.
