Becky Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Reading since August 2016. She holds roles as School Director of Student Experience, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and Module Coordinator for Ecology and Conservation (BS1051) and Biology in a Changing World (BS1041). Her research focuses on conservation biology and ecology of birds and mammals, particularly the unintended ecological consequences of human activities in urban and natural environments.
Research interests include Urban Ecology (e.g., effects of bird feeding on non-target species and domestic cats as urban predators) and Human-Wildlife Conflict (e.g., leopard-livestock interactions in South Africa). Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to life on land and sustainable cities.
Recent publications explore habitat disturbance from unleashed dogs, plant-pathogen interactions, and urbanization impacts on oak herbivory. She has received teaching awards in 2014 and 2015 for excellence in education.
Current projects include: 'Playful pedagogy: Imaginative storytelling for ecology education', 'Paws on paths: Dog walking impacts', and 'Biodiversity on solar farms'. She collaborates internationally on ecological networks and conservation strategies.
