Becky Childs is a Professor of English and Associate Dean at the College of Arts & Letters at James Madison University. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Georgia, an M.A. in English from North Carolina State University, and a B.A. in English with a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Florida.
Her research focuses on sociolinguistics, particularly dialect variation and language identity in contemporary societies. She has contributed significantly to understanding Appalachian Englishes, ethnic varieties, and the intersection of language with digital communication. Her work also emphasizes linguistic diversity in education, utilizing tools like digital badging to enhance student retention.
As Associate Dean, she oversees student recruitment, retention, and progression; drives curricular innovation; and manages communications and marketing for the College. Key initiatives include promoting interdisciplinary linguistic research, coordinating student recruitment events, and administering academic affairs such as probation and reinstatement cases.
