Dr. Beatrice Alba is a Lecturer in Psychology at Deakin University's School of Psychology (Faculty of Health), a position she has held since April 2020. She holds a PhD from Macquarie University, a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) with first-class honours from the Australian National University, and a combined Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Philosophy of Science/BSc from the University of Melbourne (2001–2007).
Her research spans gender psychology, social psychology, LGBTQ+ health, and ageing, with a focus on discrimination, well-being, and social equity. Key areas include:
- Intersectional discrimination (ageism, homophobia)
- Mental health in marginalized communities
- Healthcare accessibility for LGBTQ+ elders
- Benevolent sexism in relationships
Recent publications (2020–2024) predominantly explore ageing LGBTQ+ experiences, gender dynamics, and mental health, utilizing mixed methods to investigate structural barriers and resilience factors.
She currently supervises two doctoral candidates:
- Camila Daniela Camilleri: Harming Women’s Body Image: Sexism, Feminist Identity, and Pick-Me Culture
- Felicity Garland: The Development of Sexism and its Contribution to Violence Against Women Attitudes
In 2023, she secured an internal grant from the Deakin Network Against Gendered Violence for a project titled: An Intervention to Reduce Acceptance of Myths about Violence Against Women via Education About Benevolent Sexism (Apr 2023–Apr 2024).
