Beate Völker

Beate Völker is a Professor and Scientific Director at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR), where she leads research on social networks, social capital, and social cohesion. She has held prior academic positions at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University, serving as Professor of Sociology and Head of Department. Her interdisciplinary work bridges sociology, criminology, and human geography.

Beate Völker’s research centers on the conditions and consequences of social networks. She is particularly interested in adult friendships, neighborhood effects, and the social consequences of the pandemic. Her research employs longitudinal surveys (e.g., SSND), field experiments, and comparative analysis.

Her recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a consistent focus on social capital dynamics, pandemic-induced social isolation, network homophily, and cross-national inequality. Themes include the resilience of personal networks during crises, the role of neighborhoods in social integration, and the moral implications of scientific research. The work spans sociology, social psychology, public health, and urban studies, reflecting a deeply interdisciplinary approach.
