Dr. Bastiaan Bouwman is an Assistant Professor of Contemporary European History in a Global Context at Utrecht University's Faculty of Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. in International History from the London School of Economics (2019), alongside degrees from the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on human rights, humanitarianism, and refugee politics in the Cold War, decolonization, and globalization contexts. He has held fellowships at Princeton University, Freie Universität Berlin, and the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC.
Research Interests: Bouwman examines the intersection of politics and morality through historical analysis of institutions like the World Council of Churches and Amnesty International. His first book project traces how Christian ecumenical movements shaped human rights discourse from liberal internationalism to liberation theology. Current work explores post-1945 refugee rights development and Cold War influences on refuge politics.
