Bas van Bavel is a Professor of Transitions of Economy and Society at the Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University (2014–present). He previously held roles as Professor of Economic and Social History of the Middle Ages (2007–2014) and Research Leader at Utrecht University (2001–2006). He directs the ERC Advanced Grant project 'Coordinating for Life' and serves as Academic Director for Utrecht University's strategic theme 'Institutions for Open Societies'.
Research Interests: Van Bavel investigates long-term societal development, focusing on institutional change, resilience, and interactions between economy, society, and ecology. His work spans pre-industrial Northwestern Europe, extended to Europe/Middle East and modern periods, emphasizing comparative analysis of land, labor, and lease markets.
