Barış Akçalı is a Lecturer in the Department of Marine Sciences at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology, Dokuz Eylül University. He holds a PhD in Marine Biology from Dokuz Eylül University (2006) and a Master’s in Aquaculture from Ege University (2000). His research focuses on marine flora conservation, seagrass ecology, invasive species, and coastal pollution.
Research interests include Posidonia oceanica distribution, Mediterranean marine biodiversity, and the impacts of human activities on coastal ecosystems. He has led over 60 projects, including EU-funded initiatives like MERCES and DiverSea. Notable contributions include mapping seagrass meadows in the Aegean and Marmara seas, assessing pollution via mussel transplantation, and studying invasive Caulerpa species.
Key achievements include publishing 107 WoS-indexed articles and contributing to 12 books. He advises projects on marine protected areas (e.g., Foça SEPA) and collaborates with international networks like the Mediterranean Posidonia Network. His work bridges ecology, conservation, and policy through habitat restoration and pollution monitoring efforts.
