Prof. Baruch J. Schwartz holds the J. L Magnes Chair in Biblical Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned his Ph.D. He currently serves as the A.M. Shlansky Senior Lecturer in Biblical History and has held visiting positions including the Jacob Perlow Visiting Associate Professor in Judaic Studies at Yale University.
Schwartz specializes in biblical criticism with particular focus on the J, E, P and D documents of the Torah, the composition of the Pentateuch, and the literary, ritual and legal aspects of Leviticus and other Priestly writings. His research uniquely explores how academic biblical scholarship can coexist with traditional Jewish belief and observance, addressing complex questions about divine communication, textual transmission, and the historical development of biblical narratives.
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with fundamental questions of biblical composition, ritual significance, and theological interpretation across the Torah and prophetic literature. Schwartz frequently examines tensions between empirical and religious truth frameworks while maintaining Orthodox Jewish practice.
Schwartz has lectured extensively worldwide at institutions including Tel Aviv University, the Schechter Institute, Ben Gurion University, the University of Sydney, St. Paul Seminary, UC Davis, and Harvard Divinity School, sharing his expertise on biblical scholarship within traditional Jewish contexts.
As a native of Philadelphia and long-time resident of Efrat, Israel, Schwartz balances his academic work with family life, including involvement with his children's pursuits in the Israel Defense Forces, Hebrew University studies, tour guiding, and documentary filmmaking.
