Bart Philipsen is a Professor of German Literature at KU Leuven, where he also lectures on Theatre, Theory, and Performance in the programs of Culture Studies and Western Literature. Since 2012, he has chaired the Department of Literary Studies.
His research focuses on the enduring influence of German Romanticism and Idealism in modern and contemporary literature, art, and philosophy, as well as theoretical frameworks for tragedy, performativity, and the intersection of aesthetics and politics. His current projects include a monograph on the relationship between theory, theatre, and performance from Hölderlin to Judith Butler and a collection of essays on 19th-century German political drama.
