Barry Doyle is a Professor of Health History at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM), appointed in November 2023. He works part-time, focusing on directing the COST Action grant National, International and Transnational Histories of Healthcare, 1850-2000. Previously, he held roles at the University of Huddersfield as Professor of Health History, Head of Department, Director of Research, and Acting Dean. His research centers on hospital development, comparative healthcare history between Europe and West Africa, and First Aid history with Dr. Rosemary Cresswell of Strathclyde University.
Education: PhD in Middle Class Realignment and Party Politics (University of East Anglia, 1991) and BA from the same institution (1983). External roles include Chair of the Editorial Board for the Society for the Social History of Medicine since 2023.
Research interests span hospital finance, management, and colonial/post-colonial healthcare systems in West Africa. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through historical analyses of healthcare access and governance. Collaborations include projects on European interwar hospitals and First Aid practices in Britain and France.
Grants and publications include a book on The Politics of Hospital Provision in Early Twentieth Century Britain and the ongoing EuroHealthHist project. His recent articles explore healthcare systems' economic foundations, urban health in interwar Britain, and voluntary sector roles in early 20th-century health provision.
