Barry Cense

Barry Cense is an Associate Professor and Research Professor in the School of Engineering at The University of Western Australia (UWA), with an additional Research Professor position at Yonsei University (2020–2013). His expertise spans Bioengineering, Medical Devices, and Diagnostics, with a focus on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and its applications in healthcare. He holds a PhD in Biophysical Engineering from TU Twente (2005) and a BSc in Applied Physics from Fontys University of Applied Sciences (1995).

His research emphasizes Oculomics, leveraging OCT to study systemic diseases via retinal scans. Key areas include diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (e.g., hypertension, coronary artery disease) through retinal blood vessel analysis, non-invasive asthma imaging using bronchoscopic OCT, and terahertz imaging for corneal hydration studies. He has pioneered over 60 peer-reviewed papers and 13 patents, cited over 13,600 times.

Teaching roles include coordinating UWA’s ENSC2001 (Motion) and ELEC5552 (Design), involving hands-on projects like autonomous vehicle development and industry-linked capstone prototypes. Notable grants include projects on retinal screening for cardiovascular diseases, asthma treatment optimization, and corneal hydration analysis. Awards include the 2020 National Research Foundation Korea BrainPool fellowship.

Collaborations span institutions globally, with active projects on lung imaging, burn scar assessment, and alternatives to mulesing in livestock. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in advancing healthcare and education through innovative biomedical technologies.
