Barrett Wells is the Associate Dean for Life and Physical Sciences and Professor of Physics at the University of Connecticut. His research focuses on high-temperature superconductors, ferroelectrics, and transition metal oxide compounds, particularly exploring electron correlations, strain effects, and epitaxy-driven phase transitions. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Physics and Applied Physics from Stanford University (1986–1992).
Research Highlights:
- Early studies of superconducting gap symmetry in copper oxides using Angular-Resolved Photoemission.
- Investigation of oxygen staging and electronic phase separation in La2-xSrxCuO4+y.
- Control of structural phase transitions via strain in ferroelectric thin films.
Awards and Honors:
- National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2003-2009)
- Cottrell Scholar (Research Corporation, 2002-2007)
- Sloan Foundation Research Fellow (2000-2002)
His career includes postdoctoral work at MIT, technical roles at Boeing Corporation, and guest research at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He oversees materials synthesis and characterization in his laboratory, emphasizing oxide thin films and electrochemical treatments.
