Barbara van Schewick is an Associate Professor at Stanford Law School, with a courtesy appointment as Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Internet and Society and is an affiliated faculty member at CISAC (Center for International Security and Cooperation).

Her research focuses on the economic, regulatory, and strategic implications of communication networks, particularly how changes in network architecture affect innovation and competition on the Internet. She is a leading expert on network neutrality and has influenced policy through her 2007 petition and testimony before the FCC.
She received three major awards for her pioneering work in Internet architecture and regulation: the Scientific Award 2005 from the German Foundation for Law and Computer Science, the Award in Memory of Dieter Meurer 2006 from EDV-Gerichtstag, and the Research Prize Technical Communication 2010 from the Alcatel-Lucent Stiftung.
Van Schewick's expertise bridges law and computer science, informed by her dual academic background. Her seminal book Internet Architecture and Innovation (MIT Press, 2010) remains a foundational text in the field. She has held research positions at both Stanford University and Technical University Berlin.
