Prof. Barbara Zwicknagl is a Professor at Humboldt University of Berlin's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, leading the Chair of Applied Analysis within the Institute of Mathematics. Her research focuses on applied analysis, calculus of variations, nonlinear elasticity, and materials science, particularly microstructure formation in shape-memory alloys and biomembranes. She actively collaborates on projects like SFB/TRR 388 and Math+ clusters.
She teaches advanced courses in analysis, calculus of variations, and functional analysis, and advises students in these areas. Key research interests include variational models for microstructures, geometric effects on scaling laws, and mathematical analysis of materials. Zwicknagl organizes events like the GAMM Seminar on Microstructures 2025 and contributes to collaborative research centers.
Her work spans theoretical analysis, numerical methods, and interdisciplinary applications, with publications in top journals like Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis. She has supervised multiple students and fosters international collaboration through grants and visiting researchers.
