Dr. Barbara Tramelli is an Assistant Professor (RTD) at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano’s Faculty of Education since 2022. She specializes in Early Modern Art History, focusing on printed illustrations, Renaissance art theory, and digital methodologies for cultural heritage. Her work bridges traditional art history with computational tools, notably through databases like Lyon16ci and 1516, developed in collaboration with Oxford’s Visual Geometry Group. She holds a PhD from Freie Universität Berlin (2015), conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (2011–2015), and held roles at Ca' Foscari University (Venice) and the Warburg Institute (Oxford). Her research emphasizes digitization of historical illustrated books, particularly those printed in Lyon (1480–1600), and their cultural impact.
Education: PhD in Art History (Freie Universität Berlin, 2015), MA in Cultural and Intellectual History (Warburg Institute, London), Postdoctoral Fellowships at Max Planck Institute, Biblissima (CNRS), and Warburg Institute.
Research interests include digital iconography, early modern print culture, and interdisciplinary approaches to cultural heritage. She has contributed to projects like the Warburg Institute Iconographic Database and co-founded the 1516 database for visual analysis. Awards include the Frances Yates Fellowship and Herzog August Bibliothek Fellowship.
Teaching focuses on Digital Humanities and Art Pedagogy, with courses in Communication Sciences and Primary Education programs. She is an Associate Editor of magazén, a journal for Digital and Public Humanities.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Oxford’s Visual Geometry Group and the Venice Centre for Digital Humanities. Current projects include expanding the Lyon16ci database and analyzing illustrated books’ visual communication in Early Modern Europe.
