Her research focuses on discretionary decision-making in child protection, particularly analyzing risk and protective factors in newborn removal cases involving substance misuse. She explores tensions between equal treatment and individualization in welfare institutions, drawing on comparative studies across European jurisdictions.
Barbara’s recent publications examine care orders for newborns, institutional placements, and support systems for vulnerable families. Her work emphasizes legal frameworks, organizational theory, and cross-country policy comparisons. She is currently finalizing the analysis of risk factors in newborn removal cases.
Barbara is affiliated with the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism, contributing to projects like Discretion and the Child’s Best Interest and The Acceptability of Child Protection Interventions. Her earlier work includes a master’s thesis on power dynamics in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teams.
